Hurst Park became a leisure resort for Londoners in the early 18th century. After a long tradition for horse racing on the site, a new course was laid out in the 1890s. The course's grandstand was subject to an arson attack by suffragists in 1913. The last race was held here in 1962 and the site subsequently developed for housing.
