Hwagwan, like jokduri, is a type of headdress which was worn as a part of women’s formal wear. It became popular following King Youngjo’s and King Jeongjo’s laws regulating the wearing of hairpieces. Each facade of hwagwan has an embroidered motif: sun, clouds, crane, turtle, deer, magnolia blossom, pine, peacock, lotus blossom, waves, rock, etc. These motifs include the ten longevity symbols. At the crown, a cloisonné ddeoljam is attached. To the left, right, and center, pearls and polychrome tassels decorate the headdress. Asymmetrically on either side, a pair of cloisonné binyeo ornaments it.
