A small portion of the Mir Alam tank and adjacent area, where lies a garden namely Shahi Send Ban are visible on the map. Mir Alam Tank was built in 1806 by Abul Qasim Khan Mir Alam, popularly known as Mir Alam Bahadur, then the Prime Minister of Nawab Sikandar Jah Bahadur, Asaf Jah III, hence named after him. The Tank situated in the south-west of the city of Hyderabad and fed by a canal from the river Musi. Mir Alam laid the foundation of the reservoir in 1804 and completed in 1806 A.D. The construction was under the supervision of French Engineers, who were in the Nizam Service then. After the completion of the tank, the whole city of Hyderabad abounded by the canals of running drinking water in the underground, thus relaxed much from the scarcity of water. Till the 1930 A.D, this water body was the major source of drinking water to the city along with the Hussain Sagar lake, and post-1930s, many other tanks came into existence. Yet, until 1960, Mir Alam served drinking water to the area of Rajendranagar Municipality and presently serving only to the Nehru Zoological park and its surroundings. And, an inscription on the stone at the Mir Alam bund read that " In the name of God it flows and thank God it stands firmly" with the year 1221 A.H (1806 A.D). Moreover, it is said that the cost of construction of the tank and the Bund is of Rs. 800000 and the amount were drawn from the reward which the Nizam got from the British for supporting them against Tipu Sultan of Mysore during the war in 1799 A.D.
