Lukova created I Have a Dream for her exhibition in Birmingham, AL honoring the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights movement. The heat of the red and the strong use of contrast in her image echoes the tension and aggression experienced during the Civil Rights movement. Yet this aggression is met with nonviolence, represented by the calmly seated figure of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The dogs are leashed to unseen handlers, which is the perfect metaphor for the invisibility of institutional racism.
