A Swiss etcher and draftsman primarily active in Germany, Zingg was esteemed as one of the most
important landscapists of his generation. This Arcadian view---a technical marvel combining line etching with delicate washes of brown---is a superb example of the German Romantic landscape in which contemplative, idealized figures meditate and converse in a meticulously rendered wooded grove. It is thought that Zingg executed the etching and members of his workshop completed the hand-coloring, following one of Zingg’s drawings.
