This portrait probably depicts Thomas Chippendale junior. It is a modern copy of a portrait from the collection of Karl Freund, Sion House, Twickenham, sold at Anderson Galleries, New York, 26 March 1925, lot 346. The copy was reproduced from a photograph illustrated in The Cabinet Maker, 18 April 1925. The original is now thought to be in France. The sitter's costume suggests a date of c.1790, and the painting may be one of those exhibited at the Royal Academy by Thomas Proctor and J T Barber in 1792 and 1798 respectively. The first was titled 'Portrait of a Gentleman (Mr Chippendale)' and the second was in a group of five miniatures depicting 'Captain Fisher, Major Gascoyne, Mrs Barber, Mrs Smith, Mr Chippendale'. It is possible that the first was the painting of which this is a copy.
