The portal in Karachi, located at the Institute of Business Management (IBA), was connected to the Chicago portal for a conversation with landscape architect Ted Haffner. Attending the session from Karachi were architect Arif Belgaumi, geologist Asad Ali, urban forester Shahzad Qureshi, and active citizen and CAP employee Tara Khan. Ted and the participants spoke about their various ventures in the field of environmental work, such as Ted facilitating greater tree cover in Chicago. Also addressed was the topic of limited green belts in Karachi and the difficulties associated with mass-planting trees . Ted and the participants spoke about the parallel gentrification of Karachi and Chicago, both plagued by low cost housing schemes that never materialise, and both cities’ marginalised communities feeling the blow of climate change. Ted’s lasting suggestion during this conversation was that the various climate experts and concerned citizens of Karachi, with their varying skills and networks, join together to strategize and demand change.
