Iberian Votive Offering

4th-3rd centuries BC

Museo Juan Cabré

Museo Juan Cabré
Calaceite, Spain

Female votive offering wearing a headpiece and a long, tight-fitting tunic that reaches her ankles. The design is highly rigid and compact. At the bottom of the tunic—marked with a filed line—are the figure's disproportionately large feet, which are joined together in the Orientalizing style. Her face is well-defined. The very long, rectangular nose would originally have reached her top lip, but is now broken. The lips are full and frame a mouth marked out with a curved incision, which makes the figure appear to be smiling. Below the heavy eyebrows sit the slightly oval eyes carved in bas-relief. The right eye looks to be open and expectant with its well-crafted pupil.
