Conjunto Arqueológico de Cástulo

Conjunto Arqueológico de Cástulo
Linares (Jaén), Spain

Iberian slate plate decorated on both sides. On the back are a burin drawing formed by parallel strips with spirals plant stems. The main composition represents an Iberian rider framed by a thin line, who wield flanges and holds a spear while mounted on a chair animal skin.

In this representation there are a strong influence of Greek pottery on the author, who draw the figure of an Iberian lancer, a rider who seems to have been copied or inspired by a Greek pottery of the fourth century BC, where the equestrian performances are represented.

This piece was found among a pile of stones in the necropolis of Estacar de Robarinas during the excavation campaigns conducted by José María Blázquez in the 70s and 80s.
