From the 1950s, the studies of Max Raphael, Annette Laming-Emperaire and André Leroi-Gourhan elaborate a structuralist interpretation of the decorated caves. It is no longer a question of looking for a meaning that escapes us necessarily, but of grasping the symbolic significance of this art, its logic of composition which makes it possible to propose, according to Leroi-Gourhan, the "ideal disposition of a paleolithic sanctuary".
