The Madonna with Child, Saint John and an angel

Marco d’Oggiono1510 approx.

Milan, Italy

This panel reproduces the first version of Leonardo da Vinci's "Virgin of the rocks".
On the reverse is an inscription framed by a grotesque decoration attesting "Marco painted for Giulio". This therefore confirms the attribution to Marco D'Oggiono, among Leonardo's first disciples, but the identity of the recipient remains uncertain. It would certainly be a fairly educated person that requested a copy of the famous Leonardo painting.
The artist has painted the copy simplifying the complexity of the original’s form and lighting.
