III. Ahmed Çeşmesi/III. Ahmed Fountain

Koleksiyondaki “Zekai Kulları” imzalı, tarihsiz III. Ahmed Çeşmesi tablosunda imzada yer alan “kulları” ibaresinden resmin saraya sunulmak üzere yapıldığı anlaşılır. 1728-1729 yılları arasında inşa edilmiş III. Ahmed Çeşmesi Osmanlı çeşme mimarisinin bir başyapıtıdır. Hüseyin Zekai Paşa bu yapıtı tüm görkemiyle, yapıya duyduğu hayranlığı da fırçasına katarak betimlemiştir. Hafif meyilli zemindeki çeşme, ışığı – gölgesi, renkleri tonlamaları, çevresiyle ince ince düşünülerek kurulmuş dengeli kompozisyonun merkezindedir. Bütünüyle gösterişli bir 18. Yüzyıl köşkü izlenimi veren çeşme, resimde Ayasofya’ya bakan esas cephesinden betimlenmiştir. Padişahın kendi el yazısını taşıyan yazı kuşağı, taşın incelikle işlenmiş dokusu arasında çerçevesiyle öne çıkar. Çeşmenin hemen yanı başındaki yeni dikilmiş serviler, arkada Topkapı Sarayı’nın Birinci Avlu’sunu çeviren görmüş geçirmiş kale etkili dış duvarları ve denize doğru inen evler dizisiyle geri planda denizin bir ucundaki Adalar… Hepsi iyice “geri çekilmiş”, olabildiğince yalın ve belirginlikten uzak görünür. Ressam böylesine zengin ve çeşitli bezeme diliyle donanmış çeşmeyi tuvaline geçirirken ışığı ve renkleri olabildiğince tutumlu kullanarak, özenli fırça vuruşlarını taş ve kurşun gibi dokuların verilmesine yönlendirerek sahneyi tümüyle bu eşsiz yapıya bırakmıştır.

In the undated painting Fountain of Ahmed III, signed “Zekai Kulları,” the term kulları (meaning “servant” in Ottoman Turkish) in the signature suggests that the painting was created to be presented to the palace. Built between 1728 and 1729, the Fountain of Ahmed III is considered a masterpiece of Ottoman fountain architecture. Hüseyin Zekai Paşa depicted this monument with all its grandeur, infusing his admiration for the structure into every brushstroke.

Set at the center of a carefully balanced composition, the fountain is painted on a gently sloping ground, with its interplay of light and shadow, tones of color, and surrounding elements meticulously considered. The fountain, which entirely gives the impression of a splendid 18th-century pavilion, is shown from its main façade facing Hagia Sophia.

The calligraphic inscription band, bearing the sultan’s own handwriting, stands out framed within the delicately carved stone texture. Newly planted cypress trees next to the fountain, the aged fortress-like outer walls of the First Courtyard of Topkapı Palace, rows of houses sloping down to the sea, and in the distant background, the silhouette of the Princes’ Islands—all are rendered as though pulled back deliberately, kept understated and without emphasis.

While transferring this richly ornamented structure onto the canvas, the artist used light and color with restraint. His meticulous brushwork focuses on capturing the textures of stone and lead, allowing the scene to be fully dominated by the fountain itself—an unparalleled architectural gem.
