Old friends and neighbors, colleagues from Lincoln's days on the Eighth Judicial Circuit, political allies and adversaries, soldiers bearing the scars of conflict, and children barely old enough to understand the scene of grief were among the 75,000 mourners who climbed the stairway to the second floor of the domed Illinois Capitol.
