An unnamed Egyptian assistant in the foreground positions a reflective mirror to cast light onto inscriptions on the walls of Abu Simbel where James Henry Breasted was copying and collating texts. Breasted used a method of shading and illuminating to help make the hieroglyphic inscriptions more visible. This setup was located on the terrace south of the colossi.
