Dried shavings of gourd are produced from the fruits of the yūgao (bottle gourd). Their origin is said to be in Kizu in Osaka. The following description accompanies the text: “The fruits are cut into rings, the skin is taken off and finely peeled, and then they are put on a pole and dried in the sun. In the peeling process, the razor is held in the left hand, while the right hand is used to cut the dried shavings of the gourd into rings in a circling motion.”
