The 1863-64 season at the Brooklyn Academy of Music was marked by a two-week event that opened on February 22, 1864: the Brooklyn and Long Island Sanitary Fair. This local fundraiser benefitted the U.S. Sanitary Commission, a forerunner of the Red Cross, which collected medical supplies to aid sick and wounded Union soldiers during the Civil War.
