Illustration of the Maze, from 'The Stranger's Guide to Hampton Court Palace and Gardens' by John Grundy. The 'Stranger's Guide' was first published in 1825. John Grundy was a minor official in the Royal Household, holding the position of Groom of the Great Chamber between 1823 and 1837. He was married to the palace housekeeper and until 1855 was responsible for the opening of the palace to the public and the security of its treasures.
