Back view of Wheatstone symphonium, a cross between a harmonica and what was to become the concertina. The symphonium's body is made of nickel silver to which are attached 12 ivory buttons (studs). Twelve nickel-silver reeds are contained within the instrument. Of the estimated 200 symphoniums made by Wheatstone, only about a dozen have been preserved.
