At some point in the 18th century, this treble viol was cut down in size and converted into a large viola, to be held under the chin, rather than at the knee--the usual playing position for viols. This conversion was later reversed and the instrument was restored to its original configuration as a treble viol. The present neck and scroll are modern replacements.
