Sutter's Mill, on the south fork of the American River in Coloma, California, was a sawmill owned by pioneer John Sutter. On January 24, 1848 James Marshall found gold flakes in the tailrace of the mill. His discovery sparked the Gold Rush, and forever changed California. The reverse side of this card features John Sutter's account of the discovery. Identification Information: 2009-219 (C05263).
