Imaginary Landscape with Figures

Antonio Francesco Peruzzinica. 1695

In the right half of the picture, several figures make frantic efforts to save a foundered boat and its contents, picking up bales, jars and caskets. To the left, two monks pray while several small figures walk in the woods beyond them. The ruins of a castle can be seen on a hill in the background, and the sky is filled with white, fleecy clouds. Peruzzini’s unmistakable technique, with flickering light effects and quick loose brushstrokes, is seen to great advantage in the turbulent waters.
