This area, called Nuttari, used to be a lively hub of commerce. As such, raw materials were easy to come by and it flourished as a "town of fermented products" due to the many sake breweries, miso factories, and soy sauce breweries that popped up in the area. At that time, there were no tall buildings so the chimney arising from Imayotsukasa was in prominent view. When people came back into Niigata on the train, their first thought upon seeing it was "now I am home in Niigata."
