The Brazilian population was formed by the union of its indigenous inhabitants with the millions of immigrants who arrived over five hundred years. Brazil's ethnic and cultural diversity is largely due to the different nationalities that chose or were forced (in the case of sub-Saharan Africans) to emigrate. The miscegenation of different races makes up the rich Brazilian ethnic-cultural mosaic.
