The Montmartre district in Paris was a popular destination for people on a day out. Vincent van Gogh depicted the street leading to the gardens around the mill on the hilltop. The mill on wheels in the centre is probably some sort of billboard. Left of centre the ‘Moulin à Poivre’ is visible. In Van Gogh’s day the windmills were no longer in operation, but served as an entertainment venue and tourist attraction.
