The residential part of the imperial palace-hippodrome (circus) complex is the site where some of the best preserved Roman mosaics are exhibited as well as installations of the underfloor heating system (hypocaust). The origin of Sirmium's imperial palace is related to the period of the tetrarchy and the reforms of the emperor Diocletian which led to the establishment of various seats of power outside the traditional capital of Rome. The entire complex was located in the southeastern part of the city along the Sava River and occupied an area of about 20 hectares.
