Gabro Rajčević was born in 1912 in Dobrota, and in 1925 began to live in Dubrovnik. Three years later he came into contact with Kosta Strajnić, art historian, critic and conservator, who inspired and taught the talented young who gathered around him. As well as getting to know the literature, he met peers with the same inclinations, including Ivan Ettore and Božidar Rašica, with whom socialised and worked, in an informal painterly trio that their joint friend, the journalist and poet Gino Storelli called the tri pitura. He enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1930, studying in the class of Vladimir Becić. Three years later he returned to Dubrovnik. He spent 1940 being treated and in spite of the seriousness of his condition kept hard at work until his death in 1943 in Dubrovnik.
