The 400 or more youths who arrived at the retraining camp in Sandhof near Waidhofen an der Ybbs originally hoped to prepare there for a life in Palestine. In fact they found themselves in an SS labor camp. Between 1941 and 1943 they were all deported to concentration camps. This Alpine Zionist souvenir tells of nine teenagers and their attempt to preserve their belief in the future in these unimaginable conditions. Of the names on the back – Erich Baron, Eduard Fischl, Walter Horn, Ralph Kandelmann, Adolf Landau, Josef Rauch, Schulim Segel, Arnold Spira, Simon Vas – only Schulim Segel survived.
