Formed in 1958, the Penny Rockets were Adelaide's first rock and roll band. A very busy group, some days they would do a show on Radio 5KA before rushing off to play a dance. Johnny B Goode was released by Festival Records in 1959. Other records released by the group were Walk out and Gondolier. The group often backed vocal four piece group, the Four Tones, and touring acts such as Johnny O'Keefe. Finishing up in 1965, they re-formed for a number of shows in the 1980s and 1990s.

Saxophonist Ray O'Connor donated his scrapbook to the State Library. It included this wonderful poster promoting the 'swing-in-est dance ever!' Other members included vocalist Brian Penglase, Frank Newland on guitar, and drummer John 'Slick' Osborn.
