Hawaii is almost universally accepted as the birthplace of modern surfing. The two surfboards at the centre of this photo were made there more than a century ago, were bought by an Australian on holiday in 1919, who then brought them back to Geelong and used them from 1920 to ride waves along what is now known as the Surf Coast. The now priceless relics represent the beginnings of the Australian surfing story and are on permanent display.
