A St. Louis illustrator, Berninghaus first visited Taos, New Mexico, in 1899 while sketching for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. He returned to Taos annually before moving there permanently in 1925. Berninghaus was a founder of the Taos Society of Artists and his paintings are acclaimed throughout the United States.
Purchase funded by Beulah Lee Carter in memory of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Rutherford, pioneer ranchers of Deaf Smith County
Now on display in the PPHM Southwestern Gallery.
