In the Moraine, Dogtown Common, Cape Ann

Hartley discovered Dogtown, an abandoned town that had been one of the earliest settlements in Massachusetts, in 1920 and was intrigued by its many rock formations. He painted many images of them in the summer of 1931, finding a new connection to nature that would stay with him for the rest of his life.
