It is said that Vanda, an actress from Bones, was not satisfied with that film; and so, she asked Pedro Costa to direct another film at the Fontaínhas neighborhood – that film is named In Vanda’s Room (2000), shot with a small mini-DV camera. It is a film free from all the cinematographic artifices used by Costa in his previous films. In Vanda’s Room interconnects several stories from the inhabitants from the Fontaínhas neighborhood, that is being destroyed by the bulldozers on the instructions of Lisbon Municipality Council. The neighborhood is also home to Cape Verdean immigrants, or Portuguese citizens with Cape Verdean ancestry, a community that deeply inspired Pedro Costa in his following films.
