Incense Burner

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

This incense burner is carved from soapstone (dagah) dug from the hills around Mogadishu. An axe with a hooked stick is used to cut the stone and a knife to decorate the top part. The incense is used by women to keep themselves and their houses smelling nice. The women sit over the burner close to the glowing charcoal with her skirt spread to smell nice before and after coitus.
