This was one of the favorite incense cases of Matsudaira Fumai, the seventh feudal lord of the Matsue Domain, which he commissioned from Kojima Shikkosai. The original was created by Chôjirô I, the creator of raku-yaki (raku ware), and is listed in the chûkô-meibutsu (rediscovered objects of fame) category for famous utensils in the Un'shû Kurachô (Matsudaira Fumai’s records about the collection of tea utensils of Izumo Province). This piece was finished using kakiawase-nuri, in which the final lacquer is applied without using a cloth covering, and the grain of the paulownia wood is visible through the coat. This is an incense case that gives the impression of refinement, in which the entire, plump container was given a black lacquer, and the surface of the lid for this incense case features embossed gilt lacquer-work that displays chrysanthemums and paulownia trees.
