The scroll reads: "In this painting we finished representing that part of India with all the course of the river Gange. The lands were almost unknown to the ancients and it was six centuries ago that the Arabs sailing in search of spices discovered these provinces, and most inhabitants lived in Calicut, which they were forced to leave once the Portuguese took over said city. The very happy island of Zeilan where one can find Cinnamon and the wood called Verzin, and where there are many precious stones such as Rubies, Sapphires, Topaz, Zircons and Garnets."
