Indra was an important vedic deity, who was invoked for bringing rains or to defeat the asuras (demons). He can be identified by the vajra (thunderbolt). In Buddhist mythology, he is an important figure in the episode of Buddha's birth. He is credited with medicinal powers and even as the remover of barrenness in women. He is celebrated as an independent deity in Nepal.
