Information board for the Temple of Augustus ruins, Virginia Water, Egham, Surrey

Virginia Water is a landscaped lake in Windsor Great Park. It was created for the first Duke of Cumberland by Henry Flitcroft in circa 1750. It was the largest artificial lake of its day.

Ornamental features were added around the lake during the 18th and 19th centuries. One such feature are the ruins of the so-called Temple of Augustus. These Roman ruins were taken from Leptis Magna in North Africa in 1818 and placed in the British Museum. Between 1827 and 1830 they were re-erected at Virginia Water to form a large, artificial ruin.
