After 3rd grade, C19th Australian school students were allowed to move from slates to pen, ink and paper. Ink would be purchased in these stoneware bottles, called ‘penny’ inkwells, and while pens could be dipped directly into them, ink could also be transferred to inkwells that could be dropped into a special hole in the top of a school desk
