Canadian-based metalwork artisan Kye-Yeon Son balances her time between teaching and tireless creation. A recipient of Canada’s Saidye Bronfman Award in 2011, her work has been put on show in
both group and solo exhibitions in Canada, the
United States, Britain, Germany, Japan, and Korea.
Inspired by the seasonal changes of forests, this sculptural form stands as a paean to the cyclical resilience of trees. Resembling the bare trunks
and branches synonymous with wintertime,
the undulating cylindrical shape is made with unconventional methods using fine metal wire embellished by the artist’s unique use of colour. Volume, space, light and shadow coalesce,
alluding to perpetual fluctuations between
fortitude and fragility. The piece’s deceptively
delicate appearance reinforces the idea one’s
inner strength fuels the power to endure.
