The fishing village of Polperro was as famous for its links with smuggling as it was for its picturesque setting. Its compact cottages, narrow alleys and small harbour gave it a Mediterranean feel. The village attracted artists and geologists, and some people hoped that its relative remoteness would help to keep mass tourism at bay.
