During the Edo period, commoners took up the classical amusement of enjoying the sound of enjoying insect criess, which in turn gave rise to merchants who sold insects. The insect hawkers walked the streets in dashing clothes with various designs of insect cages for all kinds of insects. Insect cages included Yamato-style ones.
