Complicated electronic measurements were done regularly. Once in a while the cable broke and a cabel ship was sent out to repair it. The crew of the ship would bring up the cable and contact the side of the connection that was still working and get information that could help them to find the failure. While the cable was out of order a telegraphist had to stay in the houses on each end of the cable to be standby when the cable ship made contact. The cable house thus had a small stove, cot, chair, table and telephone.
