Americans' interest in nature during the late 19th century led to the creation of government-regulated parks and forests. In 1872, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming was established as a "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people." This print was based upon a photograph by William Henry Jackson, who was a well-known photographer of western landscapes.
