A source of positrons is needed for producing anti-hydrogen atoms. In the ATHENA experiment, positrons from a Na-22 source are moderated, trapped and cooled by letting them drift through a nitrogen buffer gas. Using this technique, more than 100 million positrons per minute are accumulated in a large Penning trap and then transferred to the antiproton trap for antihydrogen production.
