Private Reserve of Natural Heritage Bulcão Farm headquarters of Instituto Terra in the city of Aimorés, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the year of 2000. Photo records shows the area in the beginning of the Atlantic Forest recovery project conceived by Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado and Sebastião Salgado, facing the scenario of degradation provoked by the disorderly use of natural resources in the old cattle farm belonging to the Salgado family, decided to give back to nature what for decades extensive cattle raising had destroyed. Founded in April 1998, the Instituto Terra is an environmental NGO aimed at rescovering the Atlantic Forest ecosystem, applied scientific research, spring water protection and environmental education, based on the Rio Doce Water Basin region, between the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo.
