Before his enlightenment, Cudapanthaka had trouble remembering the Buddha's teachings. His older brother, who was also a monk, was frustrated with his dimwittedness and often scolded him. When the Buddha learned of this, he taught Cudapanthaka to recite a verse: "Sweep away the dust and remove the dirt." Since then, Cudapanthaka diligently recited this verse as he swept the floor every day. After some time, he realized that just as the external dirt is removed with a broom, the inner poisons of greed, anger, and ignorance can only be purified with the Dharma. Gradually, his mind became clearer, like the bright moon that comes forth when hazy clouds dissipate. Cudapanthaka eventually attained enlightenment and became a great Arhat.
