The Speak & Spell is a collection of educational, electronic handheld toys manufactured by Texas Instruments beginning in 1978. The toy includes a keyboard and visual display, speech synthesizer, and a cartridge slot for various ROM games. The toy was originally manufactured to assist children with commonly misspelled and mispronounced words. In 1980, the line expanded to include the Speak & Read and Speak & Math variations. The Speak & Spell was one of the first handheld electronic toys to utilize interchangeable cartridges, and the very first to contain non-recorded speech. Manufacturing concluded in 1992.
