This stylish varnished wood interior of the 1938 Tube stock trailer, combined with the red and green finishes, give a warm appearance. The moquette seating fabric, 'Roundel', was designed by Eddie Chapman 1947. The original Art Deco-inspired lampshades seem to have been removed by the time this picture was taken. The 1938 Tube stock was to be the standard London Tube train for the next 50 years and came to be seen as a design classic. One of the most important innovations was the under-floor storage of equipment that had formerly been stored at the ends of the carriages. This made more room for Passengers.
