Constructed with meticulous precision and squared for transfer, he designed an impressive church in preparation for a painting: The Birth of the Virgin with the Round Dance of Angels is now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

  • Artist Biography: Altdorfer is considered the inventor of the autonomous landscape painting and the major exponent of the Danube school, characterized by its particular interest in depicting nature and coloristic effects. The artist, who probably trained with his father, was probably schooled on miniature painting and the works of Lucas Cranach the Elder. Along with Albrecht Dürer and others, Altdorfer was repeatedly active for Emperor Maximilian I from 1512 onward.
