IMPRESSIONS OF THE HOTEL (from the diary of Ida Uhse)
“3rd of Dec. Early this morning we yet again went to the Gezirah Palace Hotel, which is situated on an island outside the city and surrounded by a great park. The palace used to belong to the Khedive of Egypt, whose princely guests were accommodated there.
The ancient treasures kept in the palace include six precious onyx fireplaces and in the park, a fountain depicting “The Young Nile”. Everything speaks of a bygone greatness.”
